Why we love WALL-E!

Originally released on June 27th 2008, WALL-E was Pixar’s 9th full length animated feature film to be released, also Pixar’s first film to focus on and being set almost entirely in space. We all know the storyline but what’s the real meaning and message behind the movie, and what is it about him that we here at TEEQ love the most?

About WALL-E

I am a big nerd when it comes to facts, figures and everything in-between so here’s some fun stuff you may or may not know:

  • WALL-E was already an idea in the 1990’s but at that time Pixar wasn’t confident enough to make a movie about two different types of robots. Back then the idea was for one of the character to behave similar to how we see R2-D2 move around and interact.

  • WALL-E took 125,000 storyboards to create where as on average most Pixar movies take only 75,000.

  • WALL-E won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

  • At the British National Movie Awards, which is voted for by the public, it won Best Family Film.

  • The movie won Best Animated Feature at the 62nd British Academy Film Awards

  • In 2010, Time ranked WALL-E #1 in ‘Best Movies of the Decade’

The message?

WALL-E sends a powerful message and if we acknowledge it for what it is and make a change for the better, the films focus is clear, the ever changing environment and what we’re doing to it as people. In today’s society there’s a clear focus on global warming and how we are damaging our environment, WALL-E shows us how waste is an issue and how it polluted Earth so bad that everyone had to pack up and leave.

The film shows what’s called ‘social criticism’ which is a focus on social issues and really making a point about it, because at the time of WALL-E being created only 33% of America’s waste was being recycled.

But why do we LOVE WALL-E?

So all doom and gloom aside, it was clear even as a kid when I watched WALL-E for the first time at the cinema that Pixar wanted you to take everything in, the first however many minutes of no talking, just noises and music an almost eerie dusty representation of Earth, litter everywhere and a broken beat up robot with binoculars for eyes with not a human in site. Wow, if that doesn’t sound fun, I don’t know what does.

From the moment you see WALL-E you fall in love with him as a character, the noises he makes, the way he moves, his collection of shiny things almost showing nostalgia of a past that once existed.

His relationship with Eve and their slow blossoming romance, and it’s clear it’s a romance that is not meant to be, they’re two different robots with two different purposes, EVE has an almost Military approach and a mission, WALL-E when we first meet has almost gone rouge and attached himself to his surroundings along with the things he finds which ultimately gives him the attachment to save human civilisation and gives him that need to return them back to Earth.

The movie is so cleverly futuristic, floating chairs, everything you want at your fingertips with absolutely no worries, who wouldn’t want that, minus the part where we all become literality confined to the chair and eat our own body weight in fast food daily… It’s fun but, too far Pixar. Too far. But that’s the point, and that’s why we love it so much, it’s so far fetched and wonderful!

The out in space scene where we see WALL-E and EVE floating around, the colour, the music, it truly is a wonderful film. I could go on forever.
