Monsters Inc, Monstropolis & Why I've Never Stopped Watching It

It's Sunday. I'm on the sofa. And Monsters Inc is on again.

I say again like it's a surprise. It's not. I've been watching Monsters Inc on lazy Sundays since I was a kid and somewhere along the way, it stopped being something I watched because there was nothing else on and became something I put on on purpose, because it's genuinely one of the best films ever made.

I'm Tom, by the way. I run Teeq alongside Alice. You've probably read her posts. This one's mine. And today it's about Monsters Inc, because I can't stop thinking about it.

Why Monsters Inc Never Gets Old

There's a version of this post where I try to be objective about Monsters Inc. Where I acknowledge it's a children's film and assess it on those terms. I'm not going to do that.

Monsters Inc is a masterpiece. The world-building is extraordinary. A parallel universe where monsters commute to work, clock in, and power an entire city by scaring children, all while being terrified of those same children themselves. The comedy is genuinely funny for adults. The friendship between Sulley and Mike is one of the best in any film, animated or otherwise. And the ending, Boo's door, gets me every single time without fail.

I watched it as a child and loved it because it was funny and the monsters were brilliant. I watch it now and love it because it's about work, and friendship, and doing the right thing even when it costs you something. It's a different film depending on how old you are. That's the mark of something genuinely special.

If you haven't watched it recently, put it on Disney+ today. You won't regret it.

The Monstropolis Expansion at Walt Disney World

Here's the thing that's been living rent-free in my head for weeks. Disney World is building Monstropolis.

As part of the ongoing expansion of Walt Disney World, a Monsters Inc-themed land is in development. An actual, real, walk-around version of the world from the film. Monstropolis.

I cannot overstate how excited I am about this.

Think about what that means. Walking through the doors of Monsters Inc. The Scare Floor. Mike's car. The CDA tape everywhere. The possibility of a ride that puts you inside the scream extraction process. The food theming. The merchandise. The photo opportunities in front of the Monsters Inc building with Sulley and Boo.

Disney Parks have a track record of absolutely nailing this kind of immersive world-building. Look at Galaxy's Edge. Look at Pandora. Look at what they did with Cars Land. When Disney commits to a themed land, they go all in. And Monstropolis, with its rich visual world and instantly recognisable characters, is going to be something else entirely.

I'm already planning the trip. I'm not even slightly embarrassed about that.

What This Means for a Walt Disney World Visit

If you're planning a Walt Disney World trip in the next couple of years, or if the Monstropolis news has just pushed you from thinking about it to actually booking it, here's what I'd say: start planning early.

WDW trips reward preparation. The best experiences go to the people who planned ahead. And if you want to arrive in a Teeq outfit rather than spending a fortune in the gift shop on day one, you'll need to order at least 3 to 4 weeks before you go. Everything we make is made to order, with a 15 to 20 working day turnaround.

Our Walt Disney World collection has everything you need for the trip, from the WDW Embroidered Coat to the WDW Gingham Tote Bag to the WDW Castle Embroidered T-Shirt. And our Pixar collection has plenty of Monsters Inc-adjacent pieces to keep you going until the Monstropolis merch drops.

Do We Sell Monsters Inc Stuff?

Honestly? Not yet. And writing this post has made me realise that needs to change.

We have a Mike Pumpkin Embroidered T-Shirt in our Halloween collection, which is brilliant, but it's seasonal. What we don't have is a proper year-round Monsters Inc range. No Sulley. No Boo. No Scare Floor. No Monstropolis.

That's on the list. Watch this space.

In the meantime, if you're a Monsters Inc fan and you want something Pixar to wear while you rewatch it for the hundredth time, our Pixar collection has you covered with Inside Out, Toy Story, Wall-E, Up, Coco and more.

Right. Back to the Film.

Boo just called Sulley Kitty for the first time. I've seen this moment approximately 40 times and I still grinned.

If you need me, I'll be here. On the sofa. Watching Monsters Inc. Planning a Walt Disney World trip. Thinking about Monstropolis.

Some Sundays are just for this.

Tom (Tim).
